Alachua County Recycling Efforts Persevere Despite Declining Market

Alachua county residents are not educated on what items are considered recyclable. Although the county’s recycling is ranked third highest in the state, the items that get placed in recycle bins cannot be recycled and have to be manually sorted out. This ultimately raises domestic contamination rates.
The problem presented is that Alachua county residents are not informed on what constitutes a recyclable item, therefore raising the efforts needed to sort through collection and reduce contamination.
The county has the problem. Although the residents are the actors throwing different objects in the recycling bin, the county has to mobilize efforts and strategies to counteract this and educate the people.

The Gainesville school board then implemented phono-graphix in after-school care programs, and later in the elementary curriculum. Yet, the district continues to underperform in reading levels.

Gainesville Gardener’s Seed Saving Program Represents Step In Fighting Climate Change
Gainesville residents are storing seeds in response to climate change affecting various varieties. Residents are attempting to raise attention to the issue and have the Gainesville City Commission recognize the importance of seed storage, but have not been successful at that level. At an individual level many continue to practice seed saving, even though they lack the resources to rebuild the seed stock in a healthy manner.
The problem is that seed varieties are becoming endangered or extinct due to climate change, and people lack the resources to rebuild the stock.

  1. Adriana, Who would have thought in our lifetimes we would experience such climate change as outline in your Gainesville Gardener's article? It is so sad that we may not have some of the seeds necessary to grown some of the varieties that are parents grew up on. My hope is that we can figure out a way to "preserve" the seeds for our children and future families.

  2. Hi Adriana,
I found the article you used on adding turn lanes in Gainesville to prevent accidents to be particularly intriguing. Everyone knows Florida is infamous for bad drivers, yet no one seems to be doing something to address the problem. It would be interesting to see how the state would go about implementing more turn lanes on Florida's roadways as a whole. I do find intersections without turn lanes to be particularly daunting to turn at. Even without the turn light it can be scary.
